Canandaigua NY potter, Margie LaTourette has been
creating functional stoneware pottery for over thirty
years. She is a graduate of the former Cardinal
Mooney High School and SUNY Potsdam. Mostly
Clay Inc. on Schoen Place in Pittsford is a craft
gallery that she currently owns and operates.
A three-stall horse barn in Canandaigua has been converted
into her studio. She has been a long time exhibitor
at area craft festivals such as the Clothesline Art
festival. You can also see her pottery work
at the Memorial Art Gallery Store and at Eureka Crafts
in Syracuse.
The title of this window creation refers to the fact
that people will be looking at it in a new way.
The window has been given a new life as a piece of
artwork. Area potters have contributed pieces
of pottery, which have been broken up and incorporated
into the mosaic. In viewing this piece, one
must wonder if that little piece of blue sky was once
perhaps part of a potterís mug or a favorite
bowl. Just as the window has been given a new
life, so have the individual pieces of which it is
composed.
The joy I find in making pottery comes not only from
the creative experience of conceiving and making the
vessel but also from the knowledge that it will be
used to bring a little bit of beauty and art into
someoneís everyday life. In todayís
world of mass produced items, the handmade piece of
pottery connects the user to the maker in a personal
way. I have heard from customers many times
who have told me that the mug that I made for them
is their favorite one in the cupboard. They
absolutely must start their day by using it for their
morning coffee. I like that! It is an
unbelievably satisfying feeling to know that
I have enriched another personís life in such
a simple way.
