Title: "School's Out" |
Artist:
Don Kieffer
Window Dimensions: 43" x 34" |
|
The
inspiration for "Schools Out"
comes from two sources. The first from the significant
bodies of water surrounding the town, the Genesee
River, Lake Ontario and Irondequoit Bay. The second,
the window frame itself, having changed its role from
housing and protecting the "school" to becoming
a stage for their release.
The window frame was prepared by removing years of
old paint and brittle glass, then staining the wood
a dark, rich walnut and sealing it with polyurethane.
The sheet steel fish were hammer forged in a Repousse'
style and bronze shaded by hand. The fields of color
are hand cut, flowing glass panels incorporating the
colors of earth and water.
The artist is presently seasonally employed at the
Genesee Country Village and Museum as a Blacksmith.
An educational background in commercial art led to
Blacksmithing instruction and work with a Master Blacksmith.
The artist has attended the prestigious Campbell Folk
School of Craft in North Carolina and maintains a
working forge studio at his residence. There, he creates
forged iron art and utilitarian ironwork for clients.
