Throughout his childhood and to present day Mr. Gow is a “tinker”; always building, creating or repairing something; and in constant motion. Very busy with his hands, in grade school and high school, Art was an important interest and led to his year round pursuit of many courses in various media including pottery, drawing, painting, and especially jewelry making. He is fascinated with things mechanical, things that move, and learning the way things work.

Those interests led to his pursuit of a creative career. In high school he decided that he wanted to become an Architect. “It is a career that is the best combination of things I like to do. It allows me to work with my hands; use color, form, texture, math and science, create space and affect emotion. Make habitable Art.”

Mr. Gow graduated from the University of Maryland in 1981 with a Bachelor of Architecture degree. He actively pursued Art throughout his college career with studies in Art History, Drawing, Oil Painting, Metal Sculpture, and Photography while he pursued an Architectural degree. College was also a place to refine his creative nature. During college his paintings were featured in an exhibit of student work at the University of Maryland Gallery in 1979.

He is constantly looking at and interpreting the world from different perspectives and finding new creative outlets. This is reflected in his Art. As a self-described “Abstract Expressionist” the subject matter of his paintings are real life occurrences and objects that he has re-interpreted at different scales and with dramatic lighting conditions; everyday things are seen from a different point of view. He sees potential in almost everything.

Since college most of his creative time has been spent designing and constructing buildings. “It is extremely gratifying to create space and buildings that respond to human needs and emotion. I enjoy challenging people’s expectations and trying to evoke an emotional response from them; trying to get them to see things through my eyes. It is also a thrill to be in a position to affect the environment that we, as human beings, live and work in and be able to express myself – creatively.”

He is currently designing a studio addition for his house, which will allow further pursuit of his Artistic Career and Architectural Business.
