Title: "A Few of My Favorite Irondequoit Things"
Artist: Mary Ellen Davis
Window Dimensions: 43" x 34"

A new millenium. A new beginning. After an absence of several years Irondequoit, NY artist Mary Ellen Davis has re-emerged in the world of art. Mary Ellen currently works exclusively in watercolor. Most often transparent, so for example, where you see white, yes, it’s the white of the paper. Both newly discovered and long-loved items and themes provide her inspiration. From there the pure artist takes over …

"I’m moved by the drama of light, the power of color and the endless motion in complex lines. Add to these the inherent challenges of transparent watercolor and you’ll perhaps begin to understand what attracts me to paint what I paint and how I paint it. For me it’s a very intoxicating and yet humbling experience to create what I consider a successful painting. I then welcome the opportunity to share my successes and find there’s an added bonus when others glimpse "the world as seen by Mary Ellen Davis" and are intrigued long enough to want to see more."

Over the years Mary Ellen has enjoyed many successes on the local and regional level. Her work has been accepted into many juried shows and she has received numerous jurors and merit awards at all levels as well as a Best of Show from the Irondequoit Art Club and a 2 nd Place with the Niagara Frontier Watercolor Society. More recently she’s been accepted into national shows and plans to continue to pursue more of this type of activity in the future. Locally her work can be viewed at the Nan Miller Gallery, 3450 Winton Place, Rochester, NY 14623.

Mary Ellen also believes in staying active in the local art scene to both learn from fellow artists and to promote the arts. She’s currently on the Board of Directors and editor of the newsletter for Rochester’s premier art group, the Rochester Art Club. Very simply stated her motto is …

LET AN ARTIST PUT A LITTLE COLOR INTO YOUR LIFE.

Project Description:
My proposal is to use the small window with glass intact as a picture frame for a full transparent watercolor painting on 240+lb watercolor paper or watercolor board. The scale drawing I submitted is actually a work in progress. It provides a very good idea of the design concept and composition which will include many of the things that come to mind when I recall my years in Irondequoit.  I do anticipate making  some changes as I work with my sponsor, Keenan's Restaurant, and as I create the art itself.  It will, however, be reflective of my trademark detailed, informal still life approach.
