Peter McGrain, of McGrain Glass International, currently
works from his home studio in Bingen, Washington.
He is an internationally recognized stained glass
artist and has been working with glass for nearly
25 years During this time he has handled every kind
of stained glass project imaginable. In all, it has
been his attention to composition and technique that
has made his imagery so successful.
In
1990 his panel "Shrimpers" was recognized
at the World Glass Congress as the finest example
of stained glass created during the entire decade
of the 1980's. As principal designer on every project,
Peter has the opportunity to work very closely with
each client to bring their commission to light. He
is a contributing writer for both Glass Art
and Glass Craftsman magazines and frequently
travels to present visiting artist workshops. A 20-year
retrospective of his work, Peter McGrain/Uncommon
Stained Glass was published in 2001.
Locally,
everyone has seen the massive glass panels he was
commissioned to do for the main terminal of the Rochester
airport in 1995. Other well known Rochester installations
can be found at the Strasenburgh Planetarium, Seneca
Park Zoo, The Genesee Hospital and elsewhere.
Since
Peter is most well known in Rochester for his magnificent
work at the airport, he created a window which showcases
all of the techniques and materials used in the airport
piece. He integrated a variety of hi-end materials
into the window, including imported faceted jewels,
hand-etched beveled elements and a generous area of
dichroic glass. He shipped the panes to Rochester
for mounting into the frame by Karl Church, his friend
and assistant on the airport installation.
Formerly
of Irondequoit, Peter graduated from Irondequoit High
School in 1974.
