ARTISTS: Richard and Barbara Devine

LOCATION: Rochester Museum and Science Center

The 11-window installation, "Cosmic Windows", designed and created by Richard and Barbra Devine, has been exhibited for the past five months at the Rochester Museum & Science Center. It was purchased by its major sponsor and donated to the Rochester Museum & Science Center in honor of Robert F. and Lois Holroyd. Thanks to the Holroyd family's generosity, our community will continue to enjoy these stunning images for years to come.

"Cosmic Windows" is a work of vibrant, yet ethereal images of the moon, the earth, the sun and other heavenly bodies. The beautifully detailed images have a transparent quality reminiscent of stained-glass. The central window, titled “The Window of Rochester”, features satellite photos of Rochester which were produced by Richard Devine’s father. Lending a mythic quality to the work is a “Sun Spirit” figure, designed by Barbra Devine.

The Devines believe their work serves as a reminder to us all to “nurture our creativity and to care for our planet just as the sun anchors our earth and gives us light.”

The Rochester Museum & Science Center is pleased to exhibit "Cosmic Windows." Upon completion, it will be on display in the windows of the lobby area of the Elaine Wilson Hall.

ABOUT THE ARTISTS:
Richard and Barbra Devine are best known for their custom gold jewelry. Their business, Devine Gold, is based in Rochester’s South Wedge Neighborhood although their work takes them across the country as they exhibit and sell their unique pieces designed around museum-quality gems.

Richard Devine took his first course in jewelry making at age 15 and has won numerous awards for his designs, including the Margaret Byrd Rawson Achievement Award and the Gertrude Herdle Moore/Isabel Herdle Award at the Rochester Memorial Art Gallery. His work has been exhibited at the Smithsonian Institution’s Renwick Museum.

Barbra Devine specializes in mixed media in addition to her fine custom jewelry. She is also known for her music-based performance art. In 1997, the Devines designed a table for the Dalai Lama. That piece, entitled “The Gatekeeper and Stargazer Earth Table” was displayed at the Memorial Art Gallery.
